Description
SUMMARY: A " winged time machine" is coming to San Diego June 5-8 to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of Normandy and liberation of Europe. "D-Day Doll," a historic C-53 aircraft that dropped paratroopers into that epic World War II battle will greet visitors at AirShow San Diego, June 7 & 8.
Representative "invasion striped" P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft will join D-Day Doll and others in the flying performance period from 11 am to 2 pm.
“Being able to sit in the seat that an 18-year-old (paratrooper) sat in 70 years ago, ready to jump (into combat), is kind of heady,” said Andy Conley, crew chief aboard the C-53D Sky Trooper nicknamed D-Day Doll. “To smell the smell of an aircraft like that is unique: Oil and gas, and burlap and greasy rags. It’s (vintage) aviation.
Rides in D-Day Veteran aircraft "D-Day Doll" will be available for purchase. June 5 - 8.
Back by popular demand will be John Collver's War Dog T6/SNJ aerobatics and new this year, his race with jet car "Smoke-n-Thunder." There will be many other historic aircraft flying and on ground display in addition to military re-enactors, paratroopers, and a mock battle with "Pyro."
Also new this year, a music concert starting at 3 pm on Saturday June 7 following the AirShow.
